Meeting The Team

Hello! Welcome to the CHLY A Sound Constitution blog page. We are a group of third year students from Vancouver Island University enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. This semester we are working together with Malaspina Radio to bring you a weekly radio show that is dedicated to community health promotion. You can listen to us each thursday morning between 10 and 11 on 101.7 FM.

I, Ashley, am the blog keeper and will be here each week keeping you updated on upcoming shows, show recaps, community health resources, fun health facts, and provide a space were you can ask your health questions and rely on us as a team to bring you well researched answers.

So let me introduce you to the group with a short, or long, bio from each member of our team!

Larissa
I'm a born and raised island girl. I love riding my bike, practicing yoga, anything and everything to do with the ocean, healthy eating and healthy living and warm cups of tea with good conversation. I came into nursing because, not only do I love biology, but I wanted a career where I could interact with all kinds of people in a positive way. With my deep rooted interest in health and healing, nursing was the perfect choice. I don't have a set nursing specialty in mind yet for when I finish school, but I have no doubt that whatever I do, I'll always call the island home.
Nikki
I am a third year BSN student from VIU
Currently residing in Ladysmith, B.C, originally from the small community of Tahsis B.C
My choice for entering into nursing came from my love of interacting with and caring for people – mixed with a keen interest in human biology. My choice for partaking in this radio show was based around how important I feel that health promotion is within our society. Radio acts as a great outlet to not only reach numerous people from every walk of life, but also allows us to form a broad sense of community. I think humour and positivity are some of life’s great medicines. I hope that nursing leads me to many international and rural opportunities.

I am currently a 20 year nursing student studying in Nanaimo. What first really drew me to nursing as a career was my own personal experience with my great-grandfather living in a care home. I am a very opinionated and outspoken person who is always interested in learning something new, and really looking forward to going on this journey of being a part of a sound constitution.
Olivia
I am a 3rd year nursing student at Vancouver Island University. I am originally from Victoria, and chose VIU to take my nursing degree because of the reputation of the school and their strategic way of choosing who gets to enter the program. I chose to come into nursing because I have a passion for helping people, especially in regards to their health and I am dedicated to empowering individuals to live the best life they can. My focus for nursing is maternal/child, however, I found that there are aspects of every area I have been in that I enjoy and I look forward to diversity of this career path.
Lacy
I am a 3rd year BSN student. I am not one of those students that knew she wanted to be a nurse since I was little, it was through personal experiences that I came to join the nursing field. I am probably the oldest student in the CHLY group and have many years of experience in public relations as I worked in a retail environment until starting school to become a nurse, therefore I believe I have learned how to relate to the general public in a therapeutic nature. I had an interest in biology and surgery and even used to make my Pops watch operations on t.v. thus I wish to specialize in OR nursing. I wanted to be part of A Sound Constitution to broaden my knowledge and views in the health care field. Being a host of a radio show gives me the opportunity to talk to people, whether professional or non-professional, that may not have been accessible otherwise. I look forward to the next year with this group and and excited to bring health promotion on a potentially national forum. I am committed to current, knowledgeable, and culturally competent care.
Sarah
I am a third year nursing student from the interior of BC. I have always known that I wanted to be a part of the health care field ever since I was a kid. My focus is in neonatal nursing with an interest in all aspects of nursing. I look forward to the opportunities in working with A Sound Constitution and how that will broaden my nursing practice!
Ashley
I am a third year nursing student originally from southern Alberta. I always wanted to teach kindergarten until I took a sports medicine course in high school and started working with the rugby teams as a sports trainer. I knew then that I was passionate about medicine. Paired with a passion for working with children I moved out to the coast straight out of high school to pursue nursing with an interest in pediatrics. My interest in pediatrics has now developed into an interest in pediatric trauma and pediatric surgery. I dream of the day I will work in a children’s hospital! I am looking forward to working in a placement that is outside of the hospital and has a high focus in health promotion in the community. I am eager and committed to bringing you the most fun and educational thursday morning you can have!

Sandy Alexander

I am a faculty member teaching in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program at Vancouver Island University since 2003. This is my third year working with this student-led radio program. Prior to working at VIU, I worked as a Registered Nurse in the areas of Orthopaedic Trauma at Vancouver General Hospital and Public Health in the Central Vancouver Island Region. I strongly believe that nurses can play a key role in relation to health promotion through the media. I am thrilled to have VIU nursing students committed to providing important health related information to our community of listeners.

Now that you know the team you can look forward to hearing our voices on A Sound Continuation CHLY 101.7 Thursday mornings from 10am-11am. We look forward to your questions and support as we work to bring you, our audience, health information that is relevant to your health care needs here in Nanaimo.
