Gender and Identity

Ever wanted to know more about what exactly transgender and intersex mean? On this week's show we explained both topics, talking about where they are similar and different, and explored what life looks like for someone who is intersex, and someone who is transgender. We also had a live in-studio guest who discussed her experiences living as a transgender female. It was a very informative show. You will be sure to learn something.

You may be wondering why we chose this topic since it can be a sensitive topic for some individuals. Our role in the community is to provide factual and informative health promotion information. When we were approached by our guest speaker about doing the show we thought that a show on gender and identity would be a great way to provide information about a topic that is rarely talked about. Bringing awareness is the first step in removing stigma and providing accurate information.

So take a listen to the show and I hope you learn something new, I know I did! Thank you so much to our guest Theresa for sharing her story and working with us in a step towards greater awareness about transgender individuals! Below is a link to the podcast as well as some resources we used in our research prior to the show, so check them out!

Vitamins!

This week on the show I talked all about Vitamins and Vitamin Deficiencies!

I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Tonia Winchester, a natrophathic physician here in Nanaimo! She talked about the top vitamin deficiencies that she sees in her practice, those being Vitamin A, D, and B12.

Here is a look at each of these vitamins and foods you can eat to increase your vitamin intake.

The first step in increasing your vitamin intake is to incorporate vitamin rich foods into your diet, so let’s talk about some specific foods you can look for next time you’re at the grocery store.

If your looking for foods rich in Vitamin A head to the produce section and look for sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, kale, Swiss chard, celery, tomatoes and winter squash. These vitamin rich veggies are going to support your immune function, day and night vision, as well as cell growth. If you enjoy fruit more then veggies you can also find vitamin A in watermelon, grapefruit, apricots and prunes.
Vitamin A can contribute to the effective treatment of many health conditions. Some common health conditions that foods rich in vitamin A can help to treat are: Acne, Cataracts, Diabetes, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Osteoarthritis, Ulcers, and Viral Infections.

Our greatest source of Vitamin D comes from the sun. Our skin cells contain what is call 7-dehydrocholesterol. Ultraviolet B sunlight is needed to convert 7-dehydrocholesterol into cholecalciferol. Cholecalciferol is the preliminary form of vitamin D3.

Here on Vancouver Island we don’t get a lot of sun in the winter months so it is important that we make sure we are taking in enough vitamin D through our food. Some great foods high in vitamin D are: Salmon, sardines, goat’s milk, shiitake mushrooms, and eggs. Not only does Vitamin D help to prevent seasonal affective disorder, it also aids in regulation of bone and muscle health, boosts the immune system, and helps in the regulation of insulin and blood sugars.

This means it can help prevent health conditions such as depression, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart attack, and asthma.
Vitamin B12 was another vitamin that Dr. Winchester noted as a common deficiency. Vitamin B12 works in the body to help form red blood cells and nerve cells.
B12 is also required by the body to help in the cycling of proteins, carbohydrates and fats throughout the body.
Foods rich in Vitamin B12 include: Salmon, sardines, venison, beef, lamb, shrimp, halibut, scallops, and yogurt. It is especially important for vegetarians to include a B12 supplement in their diet as you can see B12 is found mostly in meat. Remember it is important to consult with your family physician before making any drastic changes to your diet.

So now you can make great vitamin rich meals and take a step towards greater health!

The podcast from todays show is not yet up but it should be in the near future so keep your eyes on our blog and facebook for a link!

As promised here is a link to the article Lacy found about vitamins and their link to genetics. Very interesting stuff, so take a look!

Have a Happy and Healthful Day!

Does Wheat Hurt You?

Larissa filled us in this week on what Celiac Disease is. A lot of people are throwing around big words like CELIAC, GLUTEN, SPROUTED GRAINS, and other strange things we smile and nod at because we are too afraid to ask. Well let me tell you, us girls are A Sound Constitution are not afraid to ask anything and neither should you! The best way to attain a healthy lifestyle is to educate yourself and apply your knowledge to your life! I hope we can help you in that life long endeavour!

Here is what Larissa would like to tell you about her show.

Have you been wondering what all the buzz is about celiac disease? Or why gluten-free labels have been showing up all over your grocery store?
In this week’s show, we will be discussing the what, why, where, how and when of celiac disease. We’ll cover what celiac disease is, where it affects the body, why the prevalence is increasing and how to live a happy, healthy gluten-free life.
Included is an interview with Will Langlands and Nicole Narbonne, a couple from Powell River who, for the past four years, have proved that a gluten free diet doesn’t need to be boring or anything short of delicious! Recipes are available on their blog at farmgirl.skeenastreetstudio.ca.
We’ll also cover the difference between gluten sensitivity and celiac disease, the meaning behind “silent” celiac disease, the contributing factors that should encourage you to get tested, the challenges faced in a gluten-free diet and suggestions to counteract them.
If you have celiac disease, know someone who does or simply want to learn more – tune in to A Sound Constitution on CHLY 101.7FM in Nanaimo on Thursday, February 16th from 10-11am where we will demystify celiac disease, separate fact from fiction and provide you with information about your health care options!

If you missed the show click HERE to listen! Enjoy.

Stay tuned for a poll that is being created to ask for your input into show topics for our next semester. We would love to here from you. We appreciate feedback, encouragement, and ideas from our listeners.

I have noticed we have a lot of blog viewers but no followers, so I am giving you a nudge to push that button on the right side of the screen, follow our blog and show us your support because without fans like you our show just would be the same!

Ever Consider Donating Blood?

Have you ever considered giving blood? Did you donate blood ages ago and still haven’t made another appointment? Or are you someone who’s just looking for more information about blood and blood donation?

Well, this may just be the show for you. This week we will be looking at blood and blood donation. We cover basic facts about blood: its roles such as oxygen and nutrition transport, removing wastes and helping our immune system. The basic components of blood: Red Blood Cells (which paired with haemoglobin help carry oxygen to tissues), Plasma (liquid portion) and Platelets (what makes blood clot).
If you are an adult male you have 5-6 litres of blood currently circulating through your body, if you are female you have 4-5. When you donate blood they take approximately 450 mL of this blood which your body will reproduce within 56 days after donation. Not only are you able to donate whole blood, but the individual components (plasma and platelets) can also be taken from blood and donated.

This show features an interview with Chris Baron, the Canadian Blood Services partnership specialist for North Vancouver Island. He discusses:

Who can donate: Just about anybody between the ages of 17-61, as long as you are healthy, well hydrated and 110 pounds
Where can people donate: Vancouver Island’s permanent clinic is in Victoria, however there are always mobile clinics travelling through multiple areas of the island. These clinics can be found through the Canadian Blood Services website: blood.ca or call them at: 1-888-236-6283
We also discuss when people cannot donate: after surgery, dental work, a recent tattoo or travel to certain areas – However, this does not mean you can never donate. After a waiting period of 6-12 months most people are again eligible to donate

If you cannot donate, the Canadian Blood Services are always looking for new community volunteers to help spread the word about the continuing need for more blood donors and donation!

We also discuss the different beliefs related to blood donation: for example, people belonging to the Jehovah’s Witness’ faith choose not to donate blood due to prohibition by the Bible to ingesting blood by any means, whether it’s in the form of food, like blood sausage, or in the form of a blood transfusion. Those belonging to Rastafarianism are also hesitant about receiving blood donations.

If you are at all interested – either in donating, volunteering or just wish to learn more about blood and blood donation, please visit: www.blood.ca or call 1-888-236-6283! Also, feel free to let us know any questions or concern you may have and we will do our best to find the answer. Our goal is to demystify health care issues, separate fact from fiction, and provide you with the information about your health care options.

Thanks Nikki for a great summary of todays show! Tune in at 10 am to catch it live this morning on 101.7 FM in Nanaimo. Or hang in there for a post later today that will include the podcast from todays show!

Tomorrows Show - A Preview.... Lucky You!

Tis’ the season to second guess our New Year’s resolution? On the show today, we talked about how to set a realistic, healthy, and nutritious resolution. It is always good to have goals, however, sometimes we make too big of a goal. By making small and consistent changes in your daily activities, incorporating exercise, and being conscious of what we are eating, your goals can become reality.

If weight loss is your New Year’s resolution, or as we would like to think, your lifelong goal, then including exercise will defiantly help. Exercising 3-5 times a week and on alternating days is a great goal, but remember, that your body needs to rest. Work one muscle group on Monday and another area on Wednesday. Watch what you drink. Some juices have hidden ingredients, what may seem healthy might not be. Try to incorporate 3 servings of fruits and veggies and eat lean meats such as poultry or fish. By following these tips, as well as, limiting your alcohol intake, you will be on a healthier track in no time.

Carolyn Boas, a strength and fitness trainer and certified coach joined us in a discussion about exercise. Lacy and Carolyn talked about New Year’s resolutions being too big and to make small goals. She recommends exercising 3-4 times a week and make it attainable. Carolyn feels that organic food is great, however, it’s not practical so she recommends buying locally.

As unique as each one of us, our diets are also individualized. We talked about the differences between vegan and vegetarian diets, as well as, diabetic diets and cardiac diets. Depending on your health care needs, you and your health care team can identify which foods to include or avoid.

When trying to eat healthy, it is always good to eat fruits and veggies. Eating everything organic can be expensive. There are a few foods you may want to buy organically anyways as they seem to have more additives for maximum group. They are peaches, apples, sweet bell peppers, celery, nectarines, cherries, potatoes, pears, lettuce, grapes, strawberries, tomatoes, and spinach.

My most important information I would like you to take from our show is to consult your physician about any concerns you may have about your health. Do not change your medications, eating habits, or exercise regiment without consulting a health care professional to find out what your needs are. Remember, this is your health and everyone is different, what works for your family or friends may not work for you, but with commitment you can reach your goals.

Feel free to let us know any questions or concern you may have and we will do our best to find the answer. Our goal is to demystify health care issues, separate fact from fiction, and provide you with the information about your health care options.

Thanks Lacy for a great little overview of tomorrows show.

Tune in tomorrow - Thursday from 10-11 on 101.7 FM in Nanaimo!

Nuggets of The New Year

If you have listened to our show before you are probably familiar with nuggets. For those of you who have never listened to our show you may be thinking that we are talking about a McDonald's food product... but I assure you we are not. A nugget is not a piece of deep fried chicken, but rather a clip of information, usually 2-3 minutes long, that is inserted into our live show kind of like a commercial only better! Nuggets allow each of us to be a part of the show each week without cramming 7 of us into the live studio. We have brought back some old nuggets, kept your favorites, and even brought in a new nugget for the new year!! Now that I have said the word nugget way to many times let me explain a bit about each nugget and get you even more excited about our show!

Word On The Street
Word on the street is a nugget is a street interview style of nugget that focuses on what the community has to say in regards to our weekly topic. We will be going to the street in Ladysmith, Duncan, and Nanaimo throughout the semester to hear what you have to say!

The History Nugget
The history nugget is a look into the past. How where things different? How have things changed? How can we learn from what has happened in history? We value the information that allows us to look into the past and learn for the future and we want to bring you that information so we can learn together!

Did You Know
"Did you know?" This nugget is self explanatory! There are some fun facts out there that need to be shared. Hopefully we can teach you something new each week!

The Nutrition Nugget
The nutrition nugget is a look into how everyday things affect our health and nutrition. We all have questions about what is good for us and the nutrition nugget will shed some light on the nutrition facts that can greatly contribute to our healthy lifestyles.

Community Resource
This is a great nugget! There is so much out in the community that we often don't know about. The community resource nugget looks at the local resources we have that can aid in our health needs.

And the new nugget..... DRUM ROLL PLEASE!

Mythbuster
We are here to separate fact from fiction, demystify health issues, and provide you with your health care options and this nugget will do just that. There is a lot of information about health out there that is misleading. We are committed to finding the right answers from reliable sources so you are making well informed decisions about your health. It is important that you know the truth. No need to worry, the Mythbusters are here!

Now that you know a little bit about our nuggets I hope you are looking forward to listening in to our information packed show! Listen each week on 101.7 FM from 10-11am on Thursday. We are A Sound Constitution and can't wait to start the new season with an introductory show on January 26th! Listen in!

Meeting The Team

Hello! Welcome to the CHLY A Sound Constitution blog page. We are a group of third year students from Vancouver Island University enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. This semester we are working together with Malaspina Radio to bring you a weekly radio show that is dedicated to community health promotion. You can listen to us each thursday morning between 10 and 11 on 101.7 FM.

I, Ashley, am the blog keeper and will be here each week keeping you updated on upcoming shows, show recaps, community health resources, fun health facts, and provide a space were you can ask your health questions and rely on us as a team to bring you well researched answers.

So let me introduce you to the group with a short, or long, bio from each member of our team!

Larissa
I'm a born and raised island girl. I love riding my bike, practicing yoga, anything and everything to do with the ocean, healthy eating and healthy living and warm cups of tea with good conversation. I came into nursing because, not only do I love biology, but I wanted a career where I could interact with all kinds of people in a positive way. With my deep rooted interest in health and healing, nursing was the perfect choice. I don't have a set nursing specialty in mind yet for when I finish school, but I have no doubt that whatever I do, I'll always call the island home.
Nikki
I am a third year BSN student from VIU
Currently residing in Ladysmith, B.C, originally from the small community of Tahsis B.C
My choice for entering into nursing came from my love of interacting with and caring for people – mixed with a keen interest in human biology. My choice for partaking in this radio show was based around how important I feel that health promotion is within our society. Radio acts as a great outlet to not only reach numerous people from every walk of life, but also allows us to form a broad sense of community. I think humour and positivity are some of life’s great medicines. I hope that nursing leads me to many international and rural opportunities.
Sara T
I am currently a 20 year nursing student studying in Nanaimo. What first really drew me to nursing as a career was my own personal experience with my great-grandfather living in a care home. I am a very opinionated and outspoken person who is always interested in learning something new, and really looking forward to going on this journey of being a part of a sound constitution.
Olivia
I am a 3rd year nursing student at Vancouver Island University. I am originally from Victoria, and chose VIU to take my nursing degree because of the reputation of the school and their strategic way of choosing who gets to enter the program. I chose to come into nursing because I have a passion for helping people, especially in regards to their health and I am dedicated to empowering individuals to live the best life they can. My focus for nursing is maternal/child, however, I found that there are aspects of every area I have been in that I enjoy and I look forward to diversity of this career path.
Lacy
I am a 3rd year BSN student. I am not one of those students that knew she wanted to be a nurse since I was little, it was through personal experiences that I came to join the nursing field. I am probably the oldest student in the CHLY group and have many years of experience in public relations as I worked in a retail environment until starting school to become a nurse, therefore I believe I have learned how to relate to the general public in a therapeutic nature. I had an interest in biology and surgery and even used to make my Pops watch operations on t.v. thus I wish to specialize in OR nursing. I wanted to be part of A Sound Constitution to broaden my knowledge and views in the health care field. Being a host of a radio show gives me the opportunity to talk to people, whether professional or non-professional, that may not have been accessible otherwise. I look forward to the next year with this group and and excited to bring health promotion on a potentially national forum. I am committed to current, knowledgeable, and culturally competent care.
Sarah
I am a third year nursing student from the interior of BC. I have always known that I wanted to be a part of the health care field ever since I was a kid. My focus is in neonatal nursing with an interest in all aspects of nursing. I look forward to the opportunities in working with A Sound Constitution and how that will broaden my nursing practice!
Ashley
I am a third year nursing student originally from southern Alberta. I always wanted to teach kindergarten until I took a sports medicine course in high school and started working with the rugby teams as a sports trainer. I knew then that I was passionate about medicine. Paired with a passion for working with children I moved out to the coast straight out of high school to pursue nursing with an interest in pediatrics. My interest in pediatrics has now developed into an interest in pediatric trauma and pediatric surgery. I dream of the day I will work in a children’s hospital! I am looking forward to working in a placement that is outside of the hospital and has a high focus in health promotion in the community. I am eager and committed to bringing you the most fun and educational thursday morning you can have!

Sandy Alexander

I am a faculty member teaching in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program at Vancouver Island University since 2003. This is my third year working with this student-led radio program. Prior to working at VIU, I worked as a Registered Nurse in the areas of Orthopaedic Trauma at Vancouver General Hospital and Public Health in the Central Vancouver Island Region. I strongly believe that nurses can play a key role in relation to health promotion through the media. I am thrilled to have VIU nursing students committed to providing important health related information to our community of listeners.

Now that you know the team you can look forward to hearing our voices on A Sound Continuation CHLY 101.7 Thursday mornings from 10am-11am. We look forward to your questions and support as we work to bring you, our audience, health information that is relevant to your health care needs here in Nanaimo.
